St. Joseph, the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster-father of Jesus, was probably born in Bethlehem and probably died in Nazareth. His important mission in God's plan of salvation was "to legally insert Jesus Christ into the line of David from whom, according to the prophets, the Messiah would be born, and to act as his father and guardian (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy)." Most of our information about St. Joseph comes from the opening two chapters of St. Matthew's Gospel. No words of his are recorded in the Gospels; he was the "silent" man. We find no devotion to St. Joseph in the early Church. It was the will of God that the Virgin Birth of Our Lord be first firmly impressed upon the minds of the faithful. He was later venerated by the great saints of the Middle Ages. Pius IX (1870) declared him patron and protector of the universal family of the Church.

St. Joseph was an ordinary manual laborer although descended from the royal house of David. In the designs of Providence he was destined to become the spouse of the Mother of God. His high privilege is expressed in a single phrase, "Foster-father of Jesus." About him Sacred Scripture has little more to say than that he was a just man-an expression which indicates how faithfully he fulfilled his high trust of protecting and guarding God's greatest treasures upon earth, Jesus and Mary.


The darkest hours of his life may well have been those when he first learned of Mary's pregnancy; but precisely in this time of trial Joseph showed himself great. His suffering, which likewise formed a part of the work of the redemption, was not without great providential import: Joseph was to be, for all times, the trustworthy witness of the Messiah's virgin birth. After this, he modestly retires into the background of holy Scripture.

Of St. Joseph's death the Bible tells us nothing. There are indications, however, that he died before the beginning of Christ's public life. His was the most beautiful death that one could have, in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Humbly and unknown, he passed his years at Nazareth, silent and almost forgotten he remained in the background through centuries of Church history. Only in more recent times has he been accorded greater honor. Liturgical veneration of St. Joseph began in the fifteenth century, fostered by Sts. Brigid of Sweden and Bernadine of Siena. St. Teresa, too, did much to further his cult.

At present there are two major feasts in his honor. On March 19 our veneration is directed to him personally and to his part in the work of redemption, while on May 1 we honor him as the patron of workmen throughout the world and as our guide in the difficult matter of establishing equitable norms regarding obligations and rights in the social order.

Seven days before the Feast of the Annunciation (25 March) which commemorates Gabriel's visit to Mary announcing that she is to give birth to the Messiah, we meet St. Joseph, her spouse. 

St. Joseph was born in Bethlehem and worked as a carpenter (Matthew 13:55: "Is not this the carpenter's son?"), an occupation he later passed on to his Son (Mark 6:3: "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joseph, and Jude, and Simon? are not also his sisters here with us?"). He became betrothed to Mary, a consecrated Virgin, in order to serve as her protector. Apocryphal writings indicate that Joseph was an older man at the time, and was a widower with grown-up children, but there is no way to know for certain. 

When Mary came to be with child, his confusion and resolve to "put her away privately" in order to spare her any public humiliation were done away with when an angel of the Lord visited him in a dream and explained things to him:


Matthew 1:20-24

But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.

After Jesus was born, an angel again appeared to St. Joseph and told him to take the Holy Family away in order to escape the wrath of Herod.

Matthew 2:13-15

And after they were departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him. Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod: That it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt have I called my son.

After time in Egypt, an angel came twice more to St. Joseph:


Matthew 2:19-23

But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt, Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead that sought the life of the child. Who arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But hearing that Archelaus reigned in Judea in the room of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither: and being warned in sleep retired into the quarters of Galilee. And coming he dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was said by prophets: That he shall be called a Nazarene.

The next -- and last -- time we hear of St. Joseph in Sacred Scripture is when Jesus was "lost" in the Temple:


Luke 2:42-52

And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers. And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father's business? And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.

Tradition tells us that he had the great honor to have died in the presence of Our Lady and his Son, which fact makes him the patron of a holy death. Because during his life he was given the great responsibility of caring for and protecting the Virgin -- who is the Mother of all Israel -- and her Son, St. Joseph is considered the patron and protector of the entire Church.

சூசையப்பர், தாவீது அரசரின் வழிமரபில் தோன்றியவர். இவரது தந்தையின் பெயர் ஏலி என்கிற யாக்கோபு ஆகும். நாசரேத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்த யோசேப்பு, தச்சுத் தொழில் செய்து வந்தார். தாவீது குலத்து கன்னிப் பெண்ணான மரியாளுடன் இவருக்கு திருமண ஒப்பந்தம் செய்யப்பட்டது. அவ்வேளையில், மரியாள் தூய ஆவியின் வல்லமையால் இறைமகனைக் கருத்தாங்கும் பேறு பெற்றார். மரியாள் திடீரென கருவுற்றதால் யோசேப்பு குழப்பம் அடைந்தார். நேர்மையாளரான இவர் மரியாளை இகழ்ச்சிக்கு உள்ளாக்காமல் மறைவாக விலக்கிவிட நினைத்தார். மரியாள் கடவுளின் திருவுளத்தால் இறைமகனை கருத்தாங்கி இருப்பதை வானதூதர் வழியாக அறிந்த இவர் மரியாளை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார்.

இயேசு பெத்லகேம் மாட்டுத் தொழுவத்தில் பிறந்த வேளையிலும், அவரைக் கோவிலில் ஒப்புக்கொடுக்க எருசலேம் சென்ற நேரத்திலும், ஏரோது அரசன் அவரைக் கொல்லத் தேடியபோதும் மரியாளையும், குழந்தை இயேசுவையும் மிகுந்த அன்புடனும் அக்கறையுடனும் யோசேப்பு பாதுகாத்தார். பன்னிரண்டு வயதில் இயேசு எருசலேம் கோவிலில் தங்கிவிட்ட பொழுது, யோசேப்பு மிகுந்த கவலையுடன் தேடி அலைந்து அவரைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார். தச்சுத் தொழிலில் வந்த வருமானம் மூலம் குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பாற்றினார். மரியாளும் நெசவுத் தொழில் மூலம் இவருக்கு உதவினார்.

சூசையப்பர் இயேசுவுக்கும் தச்சுத் தொழிலைக் கற்றுக்கொடுத்தார். மரியாளுக்கு நல்ல கணவராகவும், இயேசுவுக்கு நல்ல தந்தையாகவும் யோசேப்பு விளங்கினார். சிறந்த வாய்மையும் பொறுமையும் கொண்ட யோசேப்பு, திருக்குடும்பத்தை சிறப்பாகத் தலைமைதாங்கி வழிநடத்தினார். இயேசு தனது இறையரசுப் பணியைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, இயேசுவும் மரியாளும் அருகில் இருக்க சூசையப்பர் பாக்கியமான மரணம் அடைந்தார்.

ஞானிகள் திரும்பிச் சென்றபின் ஆண்டவருடைய தூதர் யோசேப்புக்குக் கனவில் தோன்றி, "நீர் எழுந்து குழந்தையையும் அதன் தாயையும் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு எகிப்துக்குத் தப்பி ஓடிச்செல்லும். நான் உமக்குச் சொல்லும்வரை அங்கேயே இரும். ஏனெனில், குழந்தையை ஏரோது கொல்வதற்காகத் தேடப்போகிறான்" என்றார். யோசேப்பு எழுந்து, குழந்தையையும் அதன் தாயையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு, இரவிலேயே எகிப்துக்குப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார். ஏரோது காலமானதும், ஆண்டவருடைய தூதர் எகிப்தில் யோசேப்புக்குக் கனவில் தோன்றி, "நீர் எழுந்து குழந்தையையும் அதன் தாயையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டுக்குச் செல்லும். ஏனெனில் குழந்தையின் உயிரைப் பறிக்கத் தேடியவர்கள் இறந்து போனார்கள்" என்றார். எனவே, யோசேப்பு எழுந்து குழந்தையையும் அதன் தாயையும் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டுக்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தார்.

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி :
தாவீதின் வழிமரபினரான யோசேப்பும், தமக்கு மண ஒப்பந்தமான மரியாளோடு, பெயரைப் பதிவு செய்ய, கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள நாசரேத்து ஊரிலிருந்து யூதேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்லகேம் என்ற தாவீதின் ஊருக்குச் சென்றார். மரியாள் கருவுற்றிருந்தார். அவர்கள் அங்கு இருந்தபொழுது மரியாளுக்குப் பேறுகாலம் வந்தது. அவர் தம் தலைமகனைப் பெற்றெடுத்தார். விடுதியில் அவர்களுக்கு இடம் கிடைக்கவில்லை. எனவே பிள்ளையைத் துணிகளில் பொதிந்து தீவனத் தொட்டியில் கிடத்தினார்.

குழந்தைக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்ய வேண்டிய எட்டாம் நாள் வந்தது. தாயின் வயிற்றில் உருவாகுமுன்பே வானதூதர் சொல்லியிருந்தவாறு அதற்கு இயேசு என்று பெயரிட்டார்கள். மோசேயின் சட்டப்படி தூய்மைச் சடங்கை நிறைவேற்றவேண்டிய நாள் வந்தபோது குழந்தையை ஆண்டவருக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்க அவர்கள் எருசலேமுக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றார்கள்.

ஆண்டுதோறும் இயேசுவின் பெற்றோர் பாஸ்கா விழாவைக் கொண்டாட எருசலேமுக்குப் போவார்கள்; இயேசுவுக்குப் பன்னிரண்டு வயது ஆனபோது, வழக்கப்படி விழாவைக் கொண்டாட எருசலேம் சென்றனர். விழா நாள்கள் முடிந்து அவர்கள் திரும்பியபோது, சிறுவன் இயேசு எருசலேமில் தங்கிவிட்டார். இது அவருடைய பெற்றோருக்குத் தெரியாது; பயணிகள் கூட்டத்தில் அவர் இருப்பார் என்று எண்ணினர். ஒருநாள் பயணம் முடிந்தபின்பு உறவினரிடையேயும் அறிமுகமானவர்களிடையேயும் அவரைத் தேடினர்; அவரைக் காணாததால் அவரைத் தேடிக்கொண்டு எருசலேமுக்குத் திரும்பிச் சென்றார்கள். மூன்று நாட்களுக்குப்பின் அவரைக் கோவிலில் கண்டார்கள்.

வணக்கம் :
கிறிஸ்தவ புனிதர்களில், அன்னை கன்னி மரியாளுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக, புனிதர் சூசையப்பர் வணங்கப்படுகிறார். கிறிஸ்தவ வரலாற்றின் தொடக்க காலம் முதலே இவர் புனிதராக போற்றப்படுகிறார். இவர் கிறிஸ்தவர்களால் சிறப்பாக கத்தோலிக்கர் மற்றும் கிழக்கு மரபுவழித் திருச்சபையினரால் மிகவும் மதிக்கப்படுகிறார்.

நாத்திக பொதுவுடைமையாளர்கள் மே தினத்தை தொழிலாளரின் நலனுக்கென்று முதன்முறையாக உருவாக்கினர். இதற்கு முழுமையான பொருள் கிடைக்கும் வகையில் 1955ம் ஆண்டு திருத்தந்தை 12ம் பத்திநாதர் "தொழிலாளரான புனித சூசையப்பர்" திருநாளை மே மாதம் முதலாம் நாளில் திருச்சபை முழுவதிலும் கொண்டாட பணித்தார். இயேசு ஒரு தச்சு தொழிலாளி என்பதற்கு நம் தாயாம் திருச்சபை முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கிறது. இயேசுவை இப்பணிக்கு உருவாக்கியவர் சூசையே. மனிதன் தன் கைகளாலும், தன் அறிவாற்றலாலும் கிறிஸ்துவின் மறையுடலைக் கட்டி எழுப்பக் கடமைப்பட்டவன் என்பதை புனித சூசையப்பர் தன் வாழ்வின் வழியாக உணர்த்தியுள்ளார். உழைப்பை பரிசுத்தபடுத்தவும் உழைக்கிறவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மேல் வரிச்சட்டத்தை, ஒரு பரலோக பாதுகாவலரைக் கொடுக்கும்படியும் 12- ஆம் பத்திநாத பாப்பு 1995-ல் இந்த விழாவை ஏற்படுத்தினர்.

இன்றைய உலகில் மனிதன், தனது முயற்சியினாலும், திறமையாலும் அடைந்த மாபெரும் வெற்றியை நினைக்க நினைக்க அனைவரையும் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைக்கின்றது. அனைத்து நாட்டு மக்களும் கைகோர்த்துப் பணியாற்றுகிறார்கள் என்பது வெற்றிக்கு மூல காரணமாக உள்ளது. உலக மாந்தர் அனைவரும் ஒரு குடும்பத்தினர்போல் சுருங்கிவிட்ட காட்சி வியப்பானது. புதிய சாதனங்களும், கண்டுபிடிப்புகளும் எவ்வாறு பயன்படுத்தப்படவேண்டும் என்பதை திருச்சபை உலக மக்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைத்துவருகிறது. கடவுளின் திட்டம், மனித வரலாற்றில் நிறைவேற, மனிதன் எவ்வாறு ஒத்துழைக்கவேண்டும் என்பதை சூசை தன் வாழ்வில் உணர்த்தியுள்ளார். உலகின் பல பகுதிகளிலும் மனித உழைப்பின் மாண்பினைப் பாராட்டும் விழா மே மாதம் முதல் நாளன்று கொண்டாடப்படவேண்டுமென்று இத்திருவிழா நிறுவப்பட்டது.

ஏழையாக பிறந்தாலும் ஏற்றமிகு வாழ்வு வாழ்ந்தவர்! துன்பத்தில் துவண்டாலும் தூய்மையான வாழ்வு வாழ்ந்தவர்! கஷ்டங்களுக்கு மத்தியிலும் கண்ணிய வாழ்வு வாழ்ந்தவர்! இவ்வாறு வாழ்ந்தவர்தாம், புனித சூசையப்பர்.

இன்று நம் தாய் திருச்சபையானது தொழிலாளர்களின் பாதுகாவலரான புனித சூசையப்பரை நினைவு கூர்கின்றது. ஒருவர் மற்றவரின் தேவையை பூர்த்தி செய்துகொள்ள தினம் தினம் தம்தம் தகுதிக்கும், அறிவுத்திறனுக்கும் உடல் வலிமைக்கும் ஏற்ப, உழைக்கும் கரங்களை போற்றும் நாள் இந்நாள். இறைவனின் படைப்புத் தொழிலின் பங்காளிகளான தொழிலாளர்களை கரம் குவித்து வணங்கி வாழ்ந்திடும் நன்னாள் இன்று. இந்த விழா எவ்வாறு தோன்றியது?

உழைப்பை பரிசுத்தபடுத்தவும், உழைக்கிறவர்களுக்கு ஒரு மேல் வரிச்சட்டத்தை கொடுக்கவும் நம் அனைவருக்கும் ஒரு பரலோக பாதுகாவலரை கொடுக்கும்படியும் 12ம் பத்திநாதர் 1955ல் இவ்விழாவை ஏற்படுத்தினார்.

Saint Joseph, époux de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie et père nourricier de Jésus, est probablement né à Bethléem et probablement mort à Nazareth.  Sa mission importante dans le plan de salut de Dieu était « d'insérer légalement Jésus-Christ dans la lignée de David de qui, selon les prophètes, naîtrait le Messie, et d'agir comme son père et son tuteur (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy  )."  La plupart de nos informations sur saint Joseph proviennent des deux premiers chapitres de l'évangile de saint Matthieu.  Aucune de ses paroles n'est enregistrée dans les Évangiles;  c'était l'homme "silencieux".  Nous ne trouvons aucune dévotion à saint Joseph dans l'Église primitive.  C'était la volonté de Dieu que la naissance virginale de Notre-Seigneur soit d'abord fermement imprimée dans l'esprit des fidèles.  Il fut ensuite vénéré par les grands saints du Moyen Age.  Pie IX (1870) le déclare patron et protecteur de la famille universelle de l'Église.

Saint Joseph était un ouvrier ordinaire bien que descendant de la maison royale de David.  Dans les desseins de la Providence, il était destiné à devenir l'époux de la Mère de Dieu.  Son haut privilège s'exprime en une seule phrase, "Père nourricier de Jésus".  De lui, la Sainte Écriture n'a guère plus à dire qu'il était un homme juste - une expression qui indique avec quelle fidélité il a rempli sa haute confiance de protéger et de garder les plus grands trésors de Dieu sur la terre, Jésus et Marie.


Les heures les plus sombres de sa vie pourraient bien avoir été celles où il a appris pour la première fois la grossesse de Mary;  mais justement en ce temps d'épreuve Joseph se montra grand.  Ses souffrances, qui faisaient également partie de l'œuvre de la rédemption, n'étaient pas sans grande portée providentielle : Joseph devait être, pour tous les temps, le témoin fidèle de la naissance virginale du Messie.  Après cela, il se retire modestement dans l'arrière-plan de l'Écriture sainte.

De la mort de saint Joseph, la Bible ne nous dit rien.  Il y a des indications, cependant, qu'il est mort avant le début de la vie publique du Christ.  Sa mort fut la plus belle qu'on puisse avoir, dans les bras de Jésus et de Marie.  Humblement et méconnu, il passa ses années à Nazareth, silencieux et presque oublié, il resta en retrait à travers des siècles d'histoire de l'Église.  Ce n'est que plus récemment qu'il a reçu un plus grand honneur.  La vénération liturgique de saint Joseph a commencé au XVe siècle, encouragée par les saints.  Brigitte de Suède et Bernadine de Sienne.  Sainte Thérèse, elle aussi, fit beaucoup pour faire avancer son culte.

À l'heure actuelle, il y a deux grandes fêtes en son honneur.  Le 19 mars, notre vénération s'adresse à lui personnellement et à sa part dans l'œuvre de rédemption, tandis que le 1er mai, nous l'honorons en tant que patron des ouvriers du monde entier et en tant que notre guide dans la difficile question d'établir des normes équitables concernant les obligations et  droits dans l'ordre social.

Sept jours avant la fête de l'Annonciation (25 mars) qui commémore la visite de Gabriel à Marie annonçant qu'elle enfantera le Messie, nous rencontrons saint Joseph, son époux.

Saint Joseph est né à Bethléem et a travaillé comme charpentier (Matthieu 13:55 : "N'est-ce pas le fils du charpentier ?"), une profession qu'il a ensuite transmise à son Fils (Marc 6:3 : "N'est-ce pas le charpentier  , fils de Marie, frère de Jacques, de Joseph, de Jude et de Simon ? ne sont-ils pas aussi ses sœurs ici avec nous ? »).  Il s'est fiancé à Marie, une Vierge consacrée, afin de lui servir de protecteur.  Les écrits apocryphes indiquent que Joseph était un homme plus âgé à l'époque et qu'il était veuf avec des enfants adultes, mais il n'y a aucun moyen de le savoir avec certitude.

Lorsque Marie devint enceinte, sa confusion et sa résolution de "l'enfermer en privé" afin de lui épargner toute humiliation publique furent abolies lorsqu'un ange du Seigneur lui rendit visite en songe et lui expliqua les choses :


Matthieu 1:20-24

Mais pendant qu'il réfléchissait à ces choses, voici que l'ange du Seigneur lui apparut dans son sommeil, disant : Joseph, fils de David, ne crains pas de prendre avec toi Marie, ta femme, car ce qui est conçu en elle est de la  Fantôme sacré.  Et elle enfantera un fils, et tu appelleras son nom JÉSUS.  Car il sauvera son peuple de ses péchés.  Or, tout cela fut fait afin que s'accomplît ce que le Seigneur avait annoncé par le prophète, disant : Voici, une vierge sera enceinte, et enfantera un fils, et ils appelleront son nom Emmanuel, ce qui, interprété, est : Dieu avec nous.  .  Et Joseph, se levant de son sommeil, fit comme l'ange du Seigneur le lui avait commandé, et prit auprès de lui sa femme.

Après la naissance de Jésus, un ange est de nouveau apparu à saint Joseph et lui a dit d'enlever la Sainte Famille afin d'échapper à la colère d'Hérode.

Matthieu 2:13-15

Et après leur départ, voici, un ange du Seigneur apparut endormi à Joseph, disant : Lève-toi, prends l'enfant et sa mère, et vole en Égypte ; et restes-y jusqu'à ce que je te le dise.  Car il arrivera qu'Hérode cherchera l'enfant pour le faire périr.  qui se leva, prit de nuit l'enfant et sa mère, et se retira en Égypte, et il y resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode, afin que s'accomplît ce que l'Éternel avait dit par le prophète, disant : J'ai appelé mon  fils.

Après un séjour en Égypte, un ange vint deux fois de plus à saint Joseph :


Matthieu 2:19-23

Mais quand Hérode était mort, voici, un ange du Seigneur apparut endormi à Joseph en Egypte, disant: Lève-toi, prends l'enfant et sa mère, et va dans le pays d'Israël.  Car ce sont des morts qui cherchaient la vie de l'enfant.  qui se leva, prit l'enfant et sa mère, et vint au pays d'Israël.  Mais apprenant qu'Archelaus régnait en Judée dans la chambre d'Hérode son père, il craignit d'y aller, et, averti dans son sommeil, se retira dans les quartiers de Galilée.  Et étant venu, il habita dans une ville appelée Nazareth, afin que s'accomplisse ce qui avait été dit par les prophètes : Qu'il soit appelé Nazaréen.

La prochaine - et dernière - fois où nous entendons parler de saint Joseph dans les Saintes Écritures, c'est lorsque Jésus a été "perdu" dans le Temple :


Luc 2:42-52

Et lorsqu'il eut douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem, selon la coutume de la fête, et ayant accompli les jours, quand ils revinrent, l'enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem ;  et ses parents ne le savaient pas.  Et pensant qu'il était dans la compagnie, ils firent une journée de voyage et le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et connaissances.  Et ne le trouvant pas, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem, le cherchant.  Et il arriva qu'au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant.  Et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient étonnés de sa sagesse et de ses réponses.  Et en le voyant, ils s'étonnèrent.  Et sa mère lui dit : Fils, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela ?  voici ton père et je t'ai cherché avec tristesse.  Et il leur dit : Comment se fait-il que vous m'ayez cherché ?  ne savais-tu pas que je devais m'occuper des affaires de mon père ?  Et ils ne comprirent pas la parole qu'il leur avait dite.  Et il descendit avec eux, et vint à Nazareth, et leur fut soumis.  Et sa mère gardait tous ces mots dans son cœur.  Et Jésus a progressé en sagesse, en âge et en grâce auprès de Dieu et des hommes.

La tradition nous dit qu'il eut le grand honneur d'être mort en présence de Notre-Dame et de son Fils, ce qui fait de lui le patron d'une sainte mort.  Parce qu'au cours de sa vie, il a reçu la grande responsabilité de prendre soin et de protéger la Vierge - qui est la Mère de tout Israël - et son Fils, saint Joseph est considéré comme le patron et le protecteur de toute l'Église.
