He was born around 816 AD in Sicily of devout parents, Plotinus and Agatha. Joseph's family had to flee from Sicily due to the Arab invasion of the island. According to the hagiographer Theophanes they went to Peloponnese. At the age of fifteen he was tonsured a monk at the Latomos Monastery of Thessalonica. About 840 the bishop of Thessalonica ordained him a hieromonk (priest-monk). While visiting Thessalonica the distinguished Gregory of Dekapolis was so impressed with Joseph, because of his rare character, that he invited him to join his Stoudios Monastery in Constantinople.

Iconodule mission to Rome

With the resurgence of Byzantine Iconoclasm under Leo V the Armenian and Theophilos, Joseph was sent by Gregory to Rome following an invitation of Pope Leo III in 841. While en route, Joseph was captured by slave-trading pirates and sold as a slave in Crete. In slavery St. Nicholas appeared to Joseph and asked him to sing in the name of God. Nicholas then said to him: "Arise and follow me!" Joseph found freedom soon after his vision. He could finally return to Constantinople after more than one year in slavery in Crete. Theophanes is not clear, when Joseph returned to Constantinople, but he mentioned in one paragraph a triumphal return after the death of Theophilos and the restoration of the icons, but also after the recent death of Gregory of Decapolis.


According to the temporal reconstruction of the early vitae by Daniel Stiernon, Joseph founded a monastery dedicated to his deceased mentor, Gregory of Dekapolis, in 855. Joseph started with an inclosure together with his and Gregory's disciple John at St. Antipas. After the latter's death in 850, he spent some years in a kind of sanctuary dedicated to St. John Chrysostom, where he continued his ascetic labors and attracted followers. Joseph transferred the relics taken from Gregory's corpse, together with those from their disciple named John,[e] and placed them in a sanctuary of his monastery's church dedicated to St. Bartholomew the Apostle.

In 858, he was exiled to the theme of Cherson after denouncing Caesar Bardas, brother of the Empress Theodora, for illicit cohabitation. Joseph returned again to Constantinople in 867, after Bardas had been assassinated.

Through the favour of the Patriarch Ignatius I, he was appointed skeuophylax (keeper of the sacred vessels—i.e., the official responsible for the building containing the treasure of the church) in the Great Church of Constantinople. Joseph also stood high in the favor of Patriarch Photius the Great, the rival and successor of Ignatius, and accompanied Photius into banishment. He was among those who inspired the first missionaries to Russia.

He reportedly possessed the "gift of discernment" because of which Photius appointed him the spiritual father and confessor for priests, recommending him as, "A man of God, an angel in the flesh and father of fathers." He died 3 April 886 AD according to Theophanes.

பாடலாசிரியரான புனிதர் ஜோசப், ஒன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் துறவியும், ஆன்மீக கவிஞரும், பாடலாசிரியருமாவார். "இனிமையான குரல் கொண்ட திருச்சபையின் பாடும் பறவை" (The Sweet-Voiced Nightingale of the Church) என்று இவரை அறிந்தோர் கூறுவர்.

கி.பி. ஏறக்குறைய 816ம் ஆண்டு, சிசிலியிலுள்ள (Sicily) பக்தியுள்ள பெற்றோரான "புலோடினஸ்" மற்றும் "அகதாவுக்கு" (Plotinus and Agatha) மகனாகப் பிறந்தார். சிசிலியின் மீதான அரேபிய படையெடுப்பின் காரணமாக, அவருடைய குடும்பம் சிசிலியை விட்டு புலம்பெயர முடிவெடுத்தனர்.

கி.பி. சுமார் 840ம் ஆண்டில், "தெஸ்ஸலோனிக்காவின்" ஆயர் (Bishop of Thessalonica) இவரை ஒரு "குரு-துறவியாக" (Hieromonk) அருட்பொழிவு செய்வித்தார். ஒருமுறை "தெஸ்ஸலோனிக்கா" வந்த புனிதர் கிரகோரி (St. Gregory of Dekapolis), இவரது குணநலன்களால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டு, இவரை "கான்ஸ்டன்டினோபில்" (Constantinople) நகரிலுள்ள தமது "ஸ்டௌடியோஸ்" எனும் (Stoudios Monastery) துறவியர் மடத்தில் சேர அழைத்தார். கி.பி. 841ம் ஆண்டு, திருத்தந்தை மூன்றாம் லியோ (Pope Leo III) அவர்களின் அழைப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து ஜோசப், கிரகோரி அவர்களால் ரோம் அனுப்பப்பட்டார். ஆனால், அரேபிய கடல் கொள்ளைக்காரர்களால் வழியிலேயே மறித்து சிறை பிடிக்கப்பட்ட ஜோசப், "கிரேட்" (Crete) எனும் கிரேக்க தீவில் அடிமையாக விற்கப்பட்டார்.

இவர் கிரேட் தீவில் அடிமைத்தளையில் இருக்கையில், புனிதர் நிக்கோலஸ் (St. Nicholas) இவருக்கு காட்சியளித்தார். அவர், ஜோசபை பார்த்து, கடவுளின் பெயரில் பாடல் பாடு என்றார். ஜோசப் பாடியதும், "எழுந்து என்னைப் பின்தொடர்" என்று கூறிவிட்டு சென்றார். இதன்பின்னர், ஜோசபுக்கு விரைவில் விடுதலை கிடைத்தது. அவர் "கான்ஸ்டன்டினோபிள்" திரும்ப ஒரு வருட காலம் ஆனது.

கி.பி. 855ம் ஆண்டு, ஒரு துறவு மடத்தினை நிறுவி, மரித்துப்போன தமது வழிகாட்டியான புனிதர் கிரகோரியின் (Gregory of Dekapolis) பெயரில் அர்ப்பணித்தார். இறைவன் புகழ்பாடும் பண்பாடித் திரிந்த ஜோசப், தமது எழுபது வயதில் மரித்தார்.

Il est né vers 816 après JC en Sicile de parents dévots, Plotin et Agathe.  La famille de Joseph a dû fuir la Sicile en raison de l'invasion arabe de l'île.  Selon l'hagiographe Théophane, ils sont allés dans le Péloponnèse.  À l'âge de quinze ans, il fut tonsuré moine au monastère Latomos de Thessalonique.  Vers 840, l'évêque de Thessalonique l'ordonna hiéromoine (prêtre-moine).  Lors de sa visite à Thessalonique, le distingué Grégoire de Dekapolis a été tellement impressionné par Joseph, en raison de son caractère rare, qu'il l'a invité à rejoindre son Monastère des Studioios à Constantinople.

Mission Iconodule à Rome

Avec la résurgence de l'iconoclasme byzantin sous Léon V l'Arménien et Théophile, Joseph fut envoyé par Grégoire à Rome suite à une invitation du pape Léon III en 841. En route, Joseph fut capturé par des pirates marchands d'esclaves et vendu comme esclave en Crète.  .  Dans l'esclavage, Saint-Nicolas est apparu à Joseph et lui a demandé de chanter au nom de Dieu.  Nicolas lui dit alors : « Lève-toi et suis-moi !  Joseph a trouvé la liberté peu de temps après sa vision.  Il put enfin retourner à Constantinople après plus d'un an d'esclavage en Crète.  Théophane n'est pas clair, quand Joseph retourna à Constantinople, mais il mentionna dans un paragraphe un retour triomphal après la mort de Théophile et la restauration des icônes, mais aussi après la mort récente de Grégoire de Décapole.


Selon la reconstruction temporelle de la première vitae de Daniel Stiernon, Joseph a fondé un monastère dédié à son mentor décédé, Grégoire de Dekapolis, en 855. Joseph a commencé avec une enceinte avec son disciple Jean et celui de Grégoire à Saint-Antipas.  Après la mort de ce dernier en 850, il passa quelques années dans une sorte de sanctuaire dédié à saint Jean Chrysostome, où il poursuivit ses travaux ascétiques et attira des fidèles.  Joseph a transféré les reliques prises sur le cadavre de Grégoire, ainsi que celles de leur disciple nommé Jean, [e] et les a placées dans un sanctuaire de l'église de son monastère dédiée à Saint-Barthélemy l'Apôtre.

En 858, il est exilé sur le thème de Cherson après avoir dénoncé César Bardas, frère de l'impératrice Théodora, pour cohabitation illicite.  Joseph retourna à Constantinople en 867, après l'assassinat de Bardas.

Grâce à la faveur du patriarche Ignace Ier, il fut nommé skeuophylax (gardien des vases sacrés, c'est-à-dire le responsable du bâtiment contenant le trésor de l'église) dans la Grande Église de Constantinople.  Joseph s'est également élevé en faveur du patriarche Photius le Grand, le rival et successeur d'Ignace, et a accompagné Photius dans le bannissement.  Il était parmi ceux qui ont inspiré les premiers missionnaires en Russie.

Il aurait possédé le "don de discernement" à cause duquel Photius l'a nommé père spirituel et confesseur des prêtres, le recommandant comme "un homme de Dieu, un ange dans la chair et le père des pères".  Il mourut le 3 avril 886 après JC selon Théophane.
