புனிதர் கொத்தார்ட், ஓர் "ஆங்கிலோ-ஜெர்மன் ஆயர்" ஆவார். 

இவரது தந்தை "ராட்மன்ட்" ஒரு ஏழை பண்ணைத் தொழிலாளி ஆவார். இவர் மனிதநேயம் மற்றும் இறையியல் கற்றார். 

"சல்ஸ்பர்க்" உயர்மறை மாவட்ட இல்லத்திலேயே தங்கிய கொத்தார்ட், திருச்சபை நிர்வாகியாக பணியாற்றினார். இத்தாலி உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு நாடுகளுக்கு பயணித்த பின்னர், "பஸ்ஸாவு" எனும் இடத்திலுள்ள பேராலய பள்ளியில் தமது மேல்படிப்பை நிறைவு செய்தார். 

மத கூட்டங்கள் மற்றும் சந்திப்புகளுக்காக உபயோகப்படுத்தப்பட்ட கட்டிடங்களை பவரியா அரசன் இரண்டாம் ஹென்றி  பெனடிக்டைன் மடமாக மாற்றியபோது, கொத்தார்ட் அங்கே புகுநிலை துறவியாக இருந்தார். கி.பி. 993ம் ஆண்டு, குருத்துவ அருட்பொழிவு செய்விக்கப்பட்டார். கி.பி. 996ம் ஆண்டு, மடாதிபதியாக தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்ட கொத்தார்ட், "குளுனியா சீர்திருத்தம்" எனும் சீர்திருத்தத்தை தமது மடத்தில் அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். 

1022ம் ஆண்டு, டிசம்பர் மாதம், இரண்டாம் நாளன்று, "ஹில்டஷீம்" மறைமாவட்ட ஆயராக "மெய்ன்ஸ்"  உயர்மறைமாவட்ட பேராயர் "அரிபோவால்"  திருநிலைபடுத்தப்பட்டார். ஆயராக தமது பதினைந்து வருட கால ஆட்சியில், முப்பதுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆலயங்களை கட்டினார். தீவிர நோய்களால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட இவர் தமது 78 வயதில், 1038ம் ஆண்டு, மே மாதம், நான்காம் நாளன்று, மரித்தார்.

Saint Gotthard also is known as Gothard or Godehard the Bishop was a German bishop venerated as a saint. 

Godehard was born – like Bernward – about 960 and was educated in the Bavarian Benedictine monastery Niederaltaich by the archbishop of Salzburg. Godehard became abbot of the monastery in 996 and reformed it in the sense of the principles of the hl. Benedikt, the same way he reformed the monasteries of Tegernsee and Hersfeld. He was consecrated bishop of Hildesheim in the Groner Pfalzkapelle (near Göttingen) on 2 December 1022. 

About bishop Godehard’s moral conduct you can read in “Vita Godehardi prior”: “He praised himself for a prayer every night and woke the rest of the night till the beginning of the morning prayer while being in his psalm prayer. Afterwards, he attended the Holy Mass, he often sang along the Mass, then went to the uncountable workers, who he employed in the different branches of the bustles; he often sat with them to encourage them and to control their diligence. With devotion he ensured the education of the clericals in reading, reciting, singing, writing, and drawing… Enough and to spare he did almsgiving; he provided public funds to maintain the innumerable crowd of paupers. Wherever a celebration of the saints in the diocese was or a commemoration day of church consecration, Godehard went there with open-hearted delight, to behove his favourite activity, in particular, to benefit the peoples’ souls through the annunciation of the word of God. His preaches always were about the love of God and the brethren, about preservation the faith and about Christian change." 

Bishop Godehard died in St. Mauritiusstift (near Hildesheim), which he founded on 5 May 1038 and is buried in the Hildesheim cathedral. Worshipping on him began early, his official acceptance by the church is dated 29 October 1131. As distinguished from hl. Bernward hl. Godehard was and is worshipped in the whole of Europe: more than 400 churches, chapels, and other institutions share his name. The commemoration day of St. Godehard is 5 May.

À propos de la conduite morale de l'évêque Godehard, vous pouvez lire dans «Vita Godehardi prieur»: «Il s'est félicité pour une prière tous les soirs et s'est réveillé le reste de la nuit jusqu'au début de la prière du matin tout en étant dans sa prière psaume.  Ensuite, il a assisté à la sainte messe, il a souvent chanté le long de la messe, puis est allé vers les innombrables ouvriers, qu'il a employés dans les différentes branches de l'agitation;  il s'assit souvent avec eux pour les encourager et contrôler leur diligence.  Avec dévouement, il assurait l'éducation des clercs à la lecture, à la récitation, au chant, à l'écriture et au dessin… Assez et pour épargner, il faisait l'aumône;  il a fourni des fonds publics pour entretenir la foule innombrable de pauvres.  Partout où se déroulait une célébration des saints dans le diocèse ou un jour de commémoration de la consécration de l'église, Godehard s'y rendait avec plaisir à cœur ouvert, pour se consacrer à son activité favorite, en particulier, au profit des âmes des peuples par l'annonce de la parole de Dieu.  .  Ses prédications ont toujours porté sur l'amour de Dieu et des frères, sur la préservation de la foi et sur le changement chrétien. " 

L'évêque Godehard est mort à St. Mauritiusstift (près de Hildesheim), qu'il a fondé le 5 mai 1038 et est enterré dans la cathédrale de Hildesheim.  L'adoration sur lui a commencé tôt, son acceptation officielle par l'église est datée du 29 octobre 1131. Contrairement à hl.  Bernward hl.  Godehard était et est vénéré dans toute l'Europe: plus de 400 églises, chapelles et autres institutions partagent son nom.  Le jour de la commémoration de Saint Godehard est le 5 mai.
