Saint of the Day (April 12) ✠ St. Zeno, Bishop of Verona ✠ Born : 300 Mauretania Died : 12 April 371 (aged 71-72) Verona Major shrine : Basilica of San Zeno, Verona Feast : 12 April; 21 May (translation of relics) Attributes : fish, fishing rod, or a bishop holding a fishing rod, or with a fish hanging from his crozier. Patronage : Fishermen, anglers, newborn babies, Verona, Campione d'Italia A Veronese author named Coronato, who was a notary in the 7th century, claimed that Zeno was a native of Mauretania who taught children of Africa about the Catholic religion and also helped them with their education. [a] Another claim was that Zeno was a follower of Athanasius, patriarch of Alexandria, and accompanied his master when the latter visited Verona in 340. The literary style of the more than 90 Sermones attributed to Zeno is also considered evidence of his African origins, since Christian African writers of the time frequently used neologisms and wordplay.  Many of the S...

Saint of the Day (April 12) ✠ St. Julius I ✠ 35th Pope: Birth name: Julius Born: ---- Rome, The Western Roman Empire Died: April 12, 352 Rome, The Western Roman Empire Venerated in: Roman Catholic Church Feast: April 12 Biography: The Martrylogy says that Pope St. Julius I (337-352) fought for the Catholic Faith against the Arians. He acquired the fame of sanctity and rested in peace after many glorious interventions in the Arian controversies. In his Lives of the Saints, Engelbert of Cologne reports that Julius I fought against the Eusebians, who continued the Arian heresy and had a violent hatred for St. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. When St. Athanasius tried to re-take his See of Alexandria, the heretics opposed him and appealed to the Pope, who convened the Council of Sardica in Illyria (343). Pope Julius received Athanasius in Rome to affirm his support of his doctrine and position. The Council confirmed the innocence of the Holy Bishop of Alexandria....

Saint of the Day March 31 ✠ St. Balbina of Rome ✠ Born : unknown Died : c.130 CE Rome, Italy Venerated in : Catholic Church Eastern Orthodox Church Major shrine : Santa Balbina Feast : 31 March Attributes : Chains; Fetters; Young woman holding a chain; Young woman kissing the chains of captive Christians Patronage : Struma, Scrofulous Diseases, Goiter, Throat Diseases Acts of Sts. Alexander and Balbina, where it is said that she was the daughter of Quirinus, a Tribune in the Roman Army. Reference to this myth is also to be found in Usuardis' martyrology; his account of Balbina is entangled with the supposed martyrdom of Pope Alexander I. In fact, there is nothing to suggest this early pope was martyred. There was indeed a martyr of the same name, about whom nothing has survived to the present day, but the 1570 Tridentine calendar does not suggest he had been a pope. Legend has it that Quirinus was ordered to...
